Promoted to support
A vertical classroom, central to Peter Liljedahl’s “Building Thinking Classrooms” approach, utilizes vertical, non-permanent surfaces (whiteboards, windows) for student work to increase engagement, collaboration, and risk-taking. Students stand to work, often in visibly random & small groups, which improves focus, makes thinking visible, and encourages peer-to-peer learning
Key Aspects of a Vertical Classroom:
- Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces (VNPS): Using surfaces that are upright (whiteboards, windows, glass) rather than horizontal (paper, desks) promotes higher-level thinking and faster, more willing participation.
- Active Engagement: Students stand while working, which increases energy levels and reduces the “hidden” nature of, or anonymity in, seated work, leading to higher engagement.
- Collaboration: Students typically work in small, randomly grouped teams on these vertical spaces, encouraging communication, sharing of ideas, and peer-to-peer learning.
- Teacher Facilitation: Teachers move around the room to observe, evaluate, and assist in real-time, focusing on the process of learning rather than just the final answer.
- “Thinking Classroom” Context: This approach is part of a broader shift toward creating classrooms that promote thinking, often combined with random grouping, rich tasks, and de-fronting the room.
Benefits:
- Reduced Risk: The ability to instantly erase mistakes removes the fear of failure, encouraging students to take risks.
- Increased Productivity: Tasks are started quicker, and students stay on task for longer.
- Better Visibility: Teachers can immediately identify struggling groups and intervene, and students can see other groups’ work, learning from their peers.
Care & Maintenance
To ensure your Porcelain Magnetic Whiteboard is always in tip-top condition we recommend using quality SNOWMAN® whiteboard markers. Use a clean whiteboard eraser or microfibre cloth to clear your whiteboard. Fingers tend to smudge the ink and make the surface slightly oily. Dry-erase or even permanent marker ink that is stuck on can also be dissolved by writing over with fresh dry-erase ink, preferably the same colour or black. If it gets oily or smudges then you should polish it thoroughly with whiteboard cleaner or hot water and a clean cloth. Some cleaning solutions contain more soap and solids and need to be rubbed completely clear when you clean the whiteboard, otherwise they will leave a build-up on the surface that gets worse over time – you may need to follow with warm water only, on a clean cloth.
Although the ceramic-on-steel writing surface on PROWITE™ Porcelain Magnetic Whiteboards is highly resistant to solvents and most chemicals you must never use any abrasive cleaners on the surface as this could damage your beautiful writing surface irreparably.
